The following four design categories help to quantify a boat’s degree of seaworthiness, based on the wave height and wind speed the boat is designed to encounter and handle. the further offshore the vessel is expected to venture, the higher are the expectations for construction strength, stability, freeboard, reserve buoyancy, resistance to. A sail plan is a set of drawings, usually prepared by a naval architect which shows the various combinations of sail proposed for a sailing ship. sail plans may vary for different wind conditions—light to heavy. both square-rigged and fore-and-aft rigged vessels have been built with a wide range of configurations for single and multiple masts..
